Installation and updates

What is japiBooth and what is it for?

japiBooth is photobooth software (also called a photo booth) for Windows. It turns a PC with a camera, and a printer if you want one, into a photobooth for weddings and events: it handles the countdown, the formats, the printing and the QR code so your guests can take their photos home. It's the same program that runs our photobooths.

Does it work on Mac, Android or iPad?

No. japiBooth is only for Windows 10 and 11, so you need a Windows PC, for example a laptop or a mini PC.

Do I have to install Python or other programs?

No. It installs from a single Windows .exe file, with no Python or anything technical. It opens in its own window and doesn't depend on Chrome.

Only if you use a DSLR or mirrorless camera do you also need digiCamControl, which is free and installed separately.

What computer do I need?

Windows 10 or 11. There's no version for Mac, Linux or tablets.

Minimum computer: an Intel Core i3 (4th generation or equivalent) and 8 GB of RAM, which is what we've tested it on. Recommended: an Intel N150 (or better) and 12 GB of RAM.

Which languages is the program available in?

English and Spanish: the guest screen, the settings, the messages and the operator manual. The installer asks for the language when it starts (it suggests your Windows language) and the program opens in it. You can change it at any time in Settings → Idioma / Language. When you update, the language you already had is kept.

The texts you write yourself (the event name or whatever you put on the strip) appear exactly as you type them, in any language you like.

How do I update to a new version?

Run the new installer over the previous version. Your settings, event presets, photos and the program's language are kept.

If there's an internet connection, the program tells you when you open it that a new version is available and takes you to your Polar customer portal, where you download the installer. If it's not a good moment, click “Not now” and it will remind you later.

Does it come with a manual?

Yes. The installer adds a shortcut to the operator manual, as a PDF, in your Start menu, in English or Spanish depending on the language you choose when installing.

Cameras

Which cameras can I use?

Two options:

  • A USB or built-in webcam, which works with no extra software.
  • A DSLR or mirrorless camera through digiCamControl, which is free and installed separately. Only the models supported by digiCamControl work, so check its list before buying or assuming your camera will do.
Can I use my laptop's webcam?

Yes. In the settings you choose the device, the resolution and whether you want the image mirrored. There's nothing else to install.

My camera doesn't show up in digiCamControl. What can I do?

Then the program won't be able to control it, because it depends on digiCamControl. Check the USB cable, make sure the camera is in photo mode and that no other application is using it. If it still doesn't show up, you can use a webcam.

Printing and photos for your guests

Which printers does it work with?

In principle, with any printer that Windows recognizes. You choose the printer and assign a paper size to each format. On some printers the program picks the paper by itself depending on the photo; on the rest you set it by hand, and it can be set up on any of them.

Since it depends on each printer's driver, make a test print during the 14-day trial, before the license is charged.

Does it print by itself or do I have to press a button?

You decide: automatic printing when the session ends, or manual printing from the result screen, with as many copies as you want. If a guest asks for another copy later, you reprint it from the gallery.

How do guests get their photos?

With a QR code that the program shows after each session. Every photo has its own link, so each guest downloads theirs without access to the others. Photos are uploaded to a folder in your Google Drive. They can also be uploaded to a Google Photos album, but that feature is experimental and depends on Google, so the copy in your Drive is the reliable route.

What permissions does the program ask for on my Google account?

Just one: access to the files the program itself creates in your Drive (the drive.file permission). It can't see or modify the rest of your files. Photos go straight from your computer to your Drive and japiBooth doesn't receive them. You can withdraw access at any time, with “Disconnect” in Settings or from your Google account. More details in the privacy policy.

Trial, license and purchase

How does the free trial work?

You start the trial on Polar's checkout page. Polar asks for a card but doesn't charge anything during the 14 days: if you cancel before they end, you don't pay. If you don't cancel, €199 per year is charged when it ends and the license renews every year until you cancel.

If the license stops being active, you won't be able to take more photos until you activate a valid one, but your settings and your photos stay where they are.

How do I activate the license?

In the program: Settings → License, paste the license key Polar gave you and click Activate license.

What happens when the year ends?

The license renews automatically every year unless you cancel it. You can cancel at any time from your Polar customer portal: it stays active until the end of the period you've already paid for and the next renewal isn't charged.

If it isn't renewed, the key is deactivated and the program won't be able to take photos until you activate another license. Your settings and your photos stay where they are.

Can I move the license to another PC?

Yes. Deactivate it on the first computer (Settings → License → Deactivate on this device) and activate it on the new one. Each license can be used on one computer at a time.

If you no longer have the old PC, or you've reinstalled Windows, write to us and we'll free up that activation.

What if I have several photobooths?

Each license is for one photobooth. If you use several at the same time, you need one license for each.

If you need more than 2 licenses, write to us from the contact page and we'll give you a special price.

I've lost my license key.

It's in the purchase email Polar sent you and in your Polar customer portal. If you can't find it, write to us from the contact page.

Will I get an invoice?

Yes. The purchase is processed by Polar, which handles the tax and issues the invoice for each order; you can get it from your Polar customer portal.

Can I ask for a refund?

If you cancel during the 14-day trial, nothing is charged. Once the annual fee has been charged we don't give refunds, without prejudice to your legal rights as a consumer. All the details are in the refund policy.

Can I buy it from outside Spain?

The purchase is handled by Polar, which calculates the tax according to your country and issues the invoice. The program and this website are available in English and Spanish. If you have doubts about your country, write to us before starting the trial.

During the event

What happens if there's no internet at the event?

The program keeps working. It saves the photos and uploads them to the cloud when the connection comes back. The license can go up to 30 days without being checked; with internet it revalidates by itself.

What if something fails during the event?

The program warns you on screen if the camera, the cloud, the printer or the disk fails, and keeps an incident log. Photos are saved on the computer first.

Can I try it without a camera?

Yes. The installer creates a shortcut to demo mode, which works with sample photos and lets you test the settings, the backgrounds and the printing before the event.

Does it work for a magic mirror?

Yes. There's a “Mirror” visual theme designed for that kind of build. The program runs on a Windows PC connected to your screen and your camera.
